Elton Hercules John s-a nascut in Pinner, Middlesex, England, pe 25 martie 1947, sub numele de Reginald Kenneth Dwight.
A inceput sa cante la pian in 1951, fiind membru al trupei Bluesology intre 1965 si 1967. Din 1969 canta ca artist solo si alaturi de trupa Elton John.
A aparut in filmul Tommy (1975), vocea fiindu-i folosita si pentru The Lion King (1994) si The Road to El Dorado (2000). A aparut in cadrul Live Aid (1985), Freddie Mercury Tribute concert (1992), Live 8 (2005).

Este primul mare artist din vest care a cantat in URSS, in 1979. A concertat la peste 2 milioane de oameni de pe patru continente, intre 1984 si 1986. A devenit comandant al ordinului Imperiului britanic in 1996 si a fost ridicat la rangul de cavaler de catre Regina Elisabeta in 1998.
A lansat cele mai bine vandute single-uri din toate timpurile: Candle In The Wind - 1997 (peste 33.000.000 de copii vandute). A obtinut doctoratul onorofic la Royal Academy of Music, in 2002, devenind si membru al Academiei Britanice a compozitorilor - 2004.
